Mobile Phones
Students are advised to purchase a mobile phone and a sim card from a service provider like Orange. Also purchase around €12 additional credit as you will be making many calls finding out about apartments for rent. Budget for around €20-€30 in taxi fares during the first week, for looking for your apartment and completing the registration process.
There is a €4 per month pre-paid option
Please invest in a headset for your mobile phone. Mobile phones emit radiation and should not be placed against your head or in direct contact with your body. Try to use an organic or leather pouch to store your mobile in and switch the mobile off when not in use.
Currency
Have Romanian RON available for taxis. You will be taking taxis all around the city during the registration process. If you are familiar with the city, you may also take trams. Make sure you review the latest currency exchange rates on the web and that wherever you exchange money has a close enough rate on offer.
Orientate yourself
Buy a city map and Romanian phrase book as soon as you arrive. A free map is available at the Targu Mures Tourist Information Centre (Centrul de Informare Turistica in Romanian. Address at the end). Study the map. Find points of reference. Get familiar with the main streets.
Dress warm. Carry umbrella. Happy feet.
It starts getting cold towards October. Wear warm clothes and have a good jacket. Having a small umbrella in your backpack is a good idea. Keep the feet happy, warm and dry. Comfortable walking boots or shoes is a must as you’re be putting miles on them. No high heels please ladies! Invest in a good backpack with comfy straps.
